Hi everyone

I have read a lot of the posts on here of people not knowing which way to turn. After reading over & over I made my decision to have my coccyx removed. I went to see a Consultant at Highgate Hospital in London. I had a number of problems including neck, lower back & my hips. There is not a day goes past that I am not in pain. I had a 4 hour MRI which in itself was torture trying to stay still for this length of time. I went back a few days later for all the results. My Coccyx was out of alignments & I was advised & referred to see an Osteopath which might help 1 or all of my problems. Result after 6 weeks, No better at all. I must admit I was really getting more & more upset as I couldn't sit in any position as it hurt either my Coccyx, back hips or neck. After a few more weeks I made another appointment to see my Orthopedic Surgeon. I explained that the pain from my Coccyx was unbearable & that I wanted him to remove it. So we made the appointment for Hospital Admission for the 22nd of June 2017. I felt a little apprehensive as I have read mixed reports of great results & results that people said they were even worse off than prior to the surgery.

Thursday 22nd June 2.00pm:

I walked down to theatre for my operation.

Thursday 22nd June 4.00pm

I was taken back to my room from recovery. I had no pain whatsoever. I guessed this was due to the anaesthetic & probably the nerve block. My Consultant came to see me & said the operation was a text book case. He also said that the Coccyx was very mobile hence such pain so they removed the lower 2 sections. Stayed in Hospital for the night & slept like a baby, still no pain, still thinking this is too good to be true.

Friday 23rd June 7am.

Nurse came in & gave me 2 x Tramadol 2 Parecetamol & a shot in the bum for anti nausea. Got up & went to the bathroom, again no pain, so feeling really happy.

The same top up of medication at 11am. I was feeling really happy with the results so far.

Friday 23rd June 1.00pm

Was discharged & hoped that the trip home would be pain free. To my surprise the trip home was fine as it was a 15 minute drive I got off easy I guess.

Took my medication as prescribed throughout the day & went to bed around 10.00pm. Slept like a log, no pain.

Saturday 24th June.

Woke up feeling just a bit bruised on my bum, nothing major. I just took my medication throughout the day with no more than a slight bruised feeling.

I am now actually sitting on my bum without any major pain or a cushion. So far so good. Slept well last night with minimal pain.

So, that's where I am at today, sat on the couch typing this message. I will update this post as time goes on, but if I had to choose again whether to had the Coccyx removed or not. My answer Is YES, IN A HEARTBEAT. I hope this might help some people make this difficult decision, all I can add is do your homework & ask as many questions as possible to your surgeon. Ask them how many they have actually done & what their success rate, get yourself as informed as you possibly can. On that note I will say bye bye

If you have any questions please feel free to ask

Best wishes Samm

Monday 26th June

Woke up this morning & felt like I had a little bruising in the coccyx area. Managing to sit for short bursts, like 15 minutes at a time before having to shift the weight onto another area. Cut down today on my meds from 2 Tramadol 4 times a day to 2 twice a day. Went to bed around 9pm as I was feeling quiet uncomfortable.

Tuesday 27th June

Woke up at 2.00am in considerable pain. Having to sleep on my side is aggravating my arthritic hips. No chance yet to sleep on my back. Went back to sleep & woke again with pain at 4am. I am thinking to myself, this is not good……

Wednesday 28th June

Woke up early at 5.00am with terrible pain in my butt. Got up & took 2 Tramadol & went back to bed. Got up around 8am & was feeling pretty sorry for myself. So I am feeling that maybe I have dropped my meds too quickly so I have upped them again, hoping this helps. Will keep you posted.

Friday 30th June

Again I woke twice in the night with pain. Managed to have a nap around Mid day. Today I feel awful, the pain on a 1 - 10 scale is a 9. So I am back to my full medication, I think I dropped it down too quickly. Went to have the dressing changed by the nurse & was told that the stitching is very neat & looks really healthy.

Sunday 2nd July

The pain has gradually got worse & it is really painful today. I can’t believe that things were going so well & I feel as if I have gone 6 steps backwards. I am really just chillazing today. Had a couple of cat naps today which I expected as my medication helps with pain but also makes me feel a little like a zombie! If you asked me today would I have coccyx removed I think I would probably be hesitant, but I’m just hoping that the pain levels will gradually get easier

Monday 3rd June

Yesterday the pain was 10 out of 10. Feeling a little better today pain is down to around 9 out of 10. I can sit a little longer today Not directly on the coccyx area but sitting, so I am happy with that for now. I am on 2 Tramadol 3 times day & paracetamol when needed

Tuesday 4th July

Today I have been feeling a little better again like a 8.5 out of 10. I still can not drive as it is excruciating when sitting directly on the coccyx area. So I think it is going to just time time for the healing before I can drive again. On a good note the pain is getting ever so slightly better as the days go by.

Sunday 9th July

I would say the pain is now down to about a 7 out of 10. I am happy to say that the pain is bearable & getting better every day. I have cut my medication now to 2 x Tramadol AM 1 x Tramodol 2pm & 2 x Tramadol in the evening. I feel like I am almost ready to drop the 2pm tablets but have been told not to rush the process. I hope anyone that is considering having this surgery may be helped by my updates. Do get in touch if I can help at all. I will update once again in about a weeks time.

Note from Jon Miles:

I emailed more than a year after this story was posted, to ask for an update, as the long-term outcome of treatment is of great interest. In this case I did not get a reply.
