I just wanted to say I am having my coccyx removed on June 02 2014. I am a 45 year old female. I injured my coccyx about 8 years ago. I was riding my kids new bike showing them that it was ok to ride without training wheels and the bikes tires slipped and I fell straight onto my tailbone. On a scale the pain is always no less then a 7 but most of the time it is a 9. It is the kind of pain that stays with you all day long just nagging your butt. No over the counter drugs that I have taken have helped. I can get on with pain management but then I would have to depend on drugs.
I have had years of injections that worked but then they were not working as long and now not at all. My old Ortho said sorry nothing more I can do with you so bye-bye. I found a new Ortho and he agreed to do the surgery and has done some before. I cried so hard... Finally someone that can hopefully help me.
I want to be me again... Hike, camp, hunt, fish and drive. Maybe even ride horses again. Never a bike. LOL
I can't even drive 5 miles without it killing me. I can't respond to emergencies anymore with my Fire Dept. I am left gaining weight and being crabbie with my pain. That's not for me unless this does not work. I have just finished a very long and hard (pain unbearable) EMT class and I have plans of going into that field.
Note from Jon Miles:
I emailed more than a year after this story was posted, to ask for an update, as the long-term outcome of treatment is of great interest. In this case I did not get a reply.
