My tale of suffering and coccyx pain started over four years ago. Being a software engineer, I spend long intervals in front of a PC and developed bad posture over a period of time.
The pain in my lower back started off slowly and I also had pins and needles in my knee. After a few consultations the GP gave pain killers and had an X-ray done. The x-ray didn't reveal anything.
About two years ago the pain started getting a lot worse. Standing up after spending a while sitting became excruciatingly painful. I asked for an MRI but was referred to a ortho specialist instead. He did another x-ray which didn't reveal anything serious. I was diagnosed with coccydynia and told to use a cushion and see if it improves. Alternatively I could have an injection and as a last resort have the coccyx removed.
So I started using wedge cushions at work and home and it made a big difference initially. I was also doing physiotherapy and getting some treatment from an acupuncture/shiatsu specialist - Nik Kyriacou, who also teaches at the London College of Shiatsu. His meticulous and professional treatment alleviated the symptoms somewhat and brought initial relief.
After nearly a year of continuing with the same therapies I realised my symptoms weren't getting any better and I had reached a dead end. I had an MRI scan done privately but the consultant didn't find anything wrong. I was really struggling for ideas and was eager to get more specialist help for this. The pains were getting worse again. This is when I read about Michael Durtnall at the Sayer Clinic at coccyx.org (see Doctors and specialists in the UK, London) and decided to try his therapies. The first thing Michael did was to pinpoint the problem. He used his own x-ray machine to focus on the coccyx. The x-ray clearly showed the tiny coccyx bones had become badly misaligned. This was the cause of my problem. The coccyx had basically locked up. All my previous x-rays and mri scan hadn't revealed this as they were focussing on the wrong area - lower back instead of coccyx.
Michael started using his pressure techniques along with acupuncture. He advised me on specific exercises for this problem that will make the coccyx more flexible and how to correct my posture. After a few sessions my pain had started noticeably improving and I was feeling much better. Michael understood the problem as he is a coccyx expert and highly-regarded chiropractor. I still visit him as he has given me hope that the problem can be cured to a large extent. With proper management and advice this horrendous nastiness can be tackled. Michael Durntall has done wonders for which I am deeply obliged and thankful.
